Broadway’s Notable Names Converge at the 2025 Tony Awards Nominee Luncheon

Broadway luminaries and Hollywood A-listers gathered high above Midtown Manhattan to celebrate the 2025 Tony Awards nominees on Monday afternoon. The annual luncheon took place at the historic Rainbow Room—65 floors above Rockefeller Center—offering a luxurious yet convivial atmosphere in anticipation of the June 8 ceremony at Radio City Music Hall.

Cynthia Erivo, herself a Tony Award winner, is set to host this year’s event. At the luncheon, she presided over a lively crowd that included first-time nominees, veteran Tony recipients, directors, and producers. The afternoon began with a bustling cocktail hour, followed by a three-course meal, a class photo, and a special congratulatory gift from the luncheon’s sponsor, Cunard.

Among those attracting the most buzz was first-time nominee George Clooney, recognized for his leading performance in Good Night, and Good Luck. He arrived sporting a relaxed demeanor and a Broadway League baseball cap, mingling with theater legend Harvey Fierstein, who will receive a lifetime achievement award this year, and conversing with Sunset Boulevard star Tom Francis. Attendees noted Clooney’s friendly interactions with other nominees, reflecting the inclusive, celebratory spirit of the event.

Darren Criss, a newcomer to the best actor in a musical category for Maybe Happy Ending, also appeared to relish his nomination. He was seen greeting friends, enjoying canapés, and snapping photos with fellow cast members. Over at another part of the room, six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, who earned her 11th Tony nomination for Gypsy, made her rounds in an elegant white floral eyelet dress. McDonald was reportedly enthusiastic when connecting with other attendees, sharing words of wisdom gleaned from her extensive experience.

Meanwhile, Cole Escola, with dual nominations for the play Oh, Mary!—both as playwright and leading actor—was a popular figure among well-wishers. Their show reimagines First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln as an aspiring cabaret star, a premise that has drawn significant attention. Escola’s background in New York’s alt-comedy scene fueled the originality of the production, and the success of this unconventional piece has taken them by surprise.

Sarah Snook, nominated for her multi-character performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the stage after a successful run in television. Nearby, Daniel Dae Kim, recognized for his leading role in Yellow Face, took pride in representing the Asian acting community—just one of the record seven acting nominations going to artists of Asian descent this year. Conrad Ricamora, half-Filipino and nominated for portraying Abraham Lincoln in Oh, Mary!, highlighted the evolving casting opportunities now emerging across Broadway.

Another standout was Louis McCartney, the 21-year-old Irish actor nominated for best leading actor in a play for Stranger Things: The First Shadow. His portrayal of a troubled teen with psychokinetic powers resonated with audiences and voters alike, placing him among the youngest actors ever recognized in his category. Jonathan Groff, a previous Tony winner for Merrily We Roll Along, also drew attention for his nod in Just in Time, which continues his streak of acclaimed stage performances.

The luncheon menu featured pan-seared branzino and wild mushroom bolognese, adding a touch of fine dining to the festivities. Nominees appeared to savor the food and camaraderie in equal measure, capping off an afternoon that underscored the broad array of talents competing for this year’s awards. With well-known veterans and exciting newcomers in the mix, anticipation is running high for the official ceremony, where Cynthia Erivo will guide the theatre world in celebrating its finest achievements on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
