Broadway’s A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical Completes Casting

The upcoming Broadway production of A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical has finalized its cast, with performances set to begin at Studio 54 this fall. The musical, which previously had successful runs in New Orleans and Chicago, will start previews on October 16, leading up to its official opening on November 11.

Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart, known for his standout role in Aladdin and his recent appearance in the Broadway revival of Spamalot, will take on the lead role of jazz legend Louis Armstrong. James T. Lane, recognized for his performances in Chicago and A Chorus Line, will also play Armstrong in select performances.

The cast also includes Darlesia Cearcy (How to Dance in Ohio) as Lucille Wilson, Dionne Figgins (Memphis) as Daisy Parker, Kim Exum (The Book of Mormon) as Alpha Smith, and Jennie Harney-Fleming (The Color Purple) as Lil Hardin. These actresses will portray Armstrong’s four wives, each of whom had a significant influence on his life and career.

The ensemble is rounded out by a talented group of performers, including Trista Dollison as standby for the roles of the four wives, DeWitt Fleming, Jr. as Lincoln Perry, Jason Forbach as Crooner and Others, Gavin Gregory as King Joe Oliver, and Jimmy Smagula as Joe Glaser. Additional ensemble members include Brandon L. Armstrong, Wesley Barnes, Willie Clyde Beaton II, and others.

  • A Wonderful World* was conceived by Tony nominee Christopher Renshaw (The King and I, Taboo), who also serves as the director, in collaboration with novelist Andrew Delaplaine. The musical features an original book by This Is Us writer Aurin Squire and brings Armstrong’s story to life through the eyes of the women who were closest to him, set against the backdrop of his iconic music.

The production team includes RL Campbell as production stage manager, Jen Ash as stage manager, and Alex Luong as assistant stage manager, with casting directed by Duncan Stewart and Patrick Maravilla of Arc Casting.

Produced by Thomas E. Rodgers, Jr., Renee Delaplaine Rodgers, Martian Entertainment, Vanessa Williams, Liz Curtis, and Remmel T. Dickinson, A Wonderful World is also presented in association with Roundabout Theatre Company and will be part of their subscription packages.

With its compelling narrative, dynamic music, and an ensemble of talented performers, A Wonderful World is poised to become a highlight of the Broadway season.
