Bobby Darin Musical Just In Time Recoups $12.5 Million Broadway Investment

Broadway’s Bobby Darin musical Just In Time has recouped its full $12.5 million capitalization, becoming the first musical of the 2024 to 2025 Broadway season to reach profitability.

The biographical jukebox musical, which charts the life and career of the late singer and entertainer, achieved the milestone after just over a year on Broadway. Its success is notable in a challenging commercial landscape, where recoupment has become increasingly rare for new musicals. Since the pandemic, only a small number of Broadway musicals, including MJ, Six, & Juliet and The Outsiders, have managed to return their full production costs.

Developed and directed by Alex Timbers, Just In Time began performances at Circle in the Square Theatre on March 31 before officially opening on April 26. The production transforms the venue into an intimate nightclub setting, complete with a live band and a 16-member ensemble performing some of Darin’s best-known songs, including Splish Splash, Beyond the Sea, Mack the Knife and Dream Lover.

While the show received mixed reviews and missed out on a Tony nomination for best musical, it earned six nominations in other categories. Its commercial appeal was significantly boosted by original star Jonathan Groff, whose performance as Darin drew strong audience interest. During Groff’s final week in the role in late March, the show posted its highest weekly gross, exceeding $2 million.

Groff, already well known to Broadway audiences for Merrily We Roll Along, Hamilton and Spring Awakening, helped establish the production as one of the season’s strongest audience draws. Following his departure, Matthew Morrison and Jeremy Jordan joined the cast, with Jordan currently starring as Darin. Other notable replacement cast members have included Sarah Hyland and Isa Briones in the role of singer Connie Francis.

The musical follows Darin’s rise during the 1950s and 1960s, when he became known for his versatility across pop, jazz, rock and swing. Darin died in 1973 at the age of 37 following complications from open heart surgery.

With its Broadway run now profitable, Just In Time is also preparing for a wider life beyond New York. A North American tour is scheduled to launch in June 2027, extending the production’s reach to audiences across the continent.
