The Musicals of Tomorrow Take Centre Stage at BEAM2025

If you’ve ever fantasised about witnessing a show in its earliest days—before the cast is locked, before the choreography is finalised, before the first run sells out—then BEAM2025 is the elusive backstage pass you’ve been hunting. Every couple of years, Musical Theatre Network and Mercury Musical Developments collaborate, alongside Birmingham Hippodrome, to shine a spotlight on fresh stories, original compositions, and boundary-breaking theatrical forms. This year’s edition is poised to be the most robust yet.

They’ve unveiled 28 newly developed musicals plus 12 artists in a curated “Artist Spotlight.” The numbers alone are impressive—356 musicals were pitched for a chance to be featured, reflecting a surge in audience appetite for original UK musical theatre. As James Hadley, executive director of Musical Theatre Network, describes it: “That buzz is not unrelated to the fact that the quality, craft ability and creative innovation of what was pitched was arguably at an all-time high.” It’s a testament to the unstoppable force of homegrown storytelling talent.

Here’s the real kicker: over 35 musicals that once graced past BEAM events have since become full productions, with some even crossing the Atlantic to dazzle Broadway. Cue the rapturous applause for OPERATION MINCEMEAT, which opened on Broadway just last night and continues to captivate West End audiences. And if you’ve ever swooned over TWO STRANGERS (CARRY A CAKE ACROSS NEW YORK), you’ll be thrilled to know it recently confirmed its North American premiere. Proof positive that these two days in May aren’t just ephemeral celebrations; they can catapult a show—and its creators—into the stratosphere of international acclaim.

Who’s Stepping into the Spotlight?

Among the many reasons to get excited, the “Artist Spotlight” is a gem in BEAM’s crown. This year, 12 creatives are being singled out for their unique flair and promise. From Annabelle Lee Revak to Evie Press, Hayley Canham to Leo Simpe-Asante, each individual brings a different perspective, cultural background, and approach to musical theatre. Lewis Cornay and Mahlon Prince are generating whispers of curiosity with their playful songwriting, while Matt Thorpe and Max Welton have garnered attention for projects that leap across genres. Rounding out the list are Michelle-Kim Vacciana, Parisa Shahmir, Rev Ben Cahill-Nicholls, and the dynamic duo Tennick and Ramsay. Their collective presence at BEAM2025 suggests an exciting shift toward a more expansive, inclusive view of what musicals can be.

It’s not just about singing and dancing either. These artists are telling stories that intersect with folklore, post-war histories, climate activism, and modern identity. The message is clear: whether you fancy a classic Broadway belt or a gritty spoken-word ballad, there’s room for every sound and subject matter on the BEAM stage.

The Musicals Making Waves

One of my favourite parts of BEAM is the wild array of subject matter on display. You might find yourself enthralled by ALL MY HEART, a poignant reflection on donor families’ resilience, then wander into BLOCKS FALLING, which wrestles with the tussle between art and capitalism in a way that’s as electrifying as it is introspective. If you’re partial to dark comedy, BOG BODIES promises a graveyard romp that’s both chilling and wickedly amusing. Over in CHASING ICARUS, there’s a profound dive into the identity of 18th-century castrati singers—yes, those high notes once achieved through, shall we say, extraordinary surgical circumstances.

But perhaps you’d prefer a good legal drama? CLARA AT THE DOOR WITH A REVOLVER offers a courtroom spectacle based on true events, guaranteed to have you debating moral ambiguities long after the final bow. For a lighter touch, LAYLA AND CAPTAIN DOOM pairs a playful heroine with high-seas adventure, while CRICKET AND THE FREEBUGS conjures an entirely new universe teeming with whimsy. Elsewhere, DUPPY QUADRILLE blends Caribbean folklore with a dash of the supernatural, and the irreverently titled EXOTIC! is a flamboyant, queer wrestling fantasia that dares you not to take your eyes off the ring.

If you’re a fan of adaptations, you’re in luck. EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE revisits post-9/11 loss and healing, PARADISE ROAD reframes the trials of WWII survival, and MAISON MAC relocates Macbeth to a culinary battlefield of high-stakes fine dining. Surreal comedy enthusiasts can explore FLAT EARTH, and sports historians (or those who enjoy a witty spin) might just love FAIRLIGHT, presenting the origins of lawn tennis through a queer lens. And should you crave disco, HONG KONG AFTER MIDNIGHT will have you dancing in your seat, doubling as a statement against political oppression. Meanwhile, ELBOW DEEP invites you to wade through grief and healing, a quiet reflection that packs a surprising emotional punch.

The line-up pushes further into lesser-trod territory with OTHERS, capturing the activism and identity struggles of hidden teenagers, and SHELTERED, which addresses the challenges of working-class life. Venture into the rural corners of Devon with THE ORCHARD, where roots run as deep as family secrets, or discover the comedic reinvention of Sheridan’s classic in THE RIVALS OF PINNER. If you’re craving supernatural introspection, THE SNARE AND FERAL might be your ticket, and THE SWANSONG is all about redemption and second chances.

To round out the selection, PIT STOP AND WASH reimagines romance in a magically mundane laundrette, while Y PENTREF, performed in Welsh, portrays a community on the brink of crisis. TIME-BOMB addresses climate activism in a taut courtroom setting, VAMP injects rock ‘n’ roll verve into tales of rebellion, and 73 SECONDS revisits the Challenger spacecraft tragedy with a close look at grief and collective courage. It’s a veritable treasure trove of genres, styles, and thematic explorations.

Data & Credibility

When an event boasts so many new works, it’s easy to wonder about the track record of success. BEAM’s numbers speak for themselves: from the 35 musicals previously showcased that have become full productions, to the swirling momentum that sees OPERATION MINCEMEAT now wowing Broadway audiences, it’s clear this is not just a lofty “workshop.” It’s a proven launchpad. In an industry often reliant on revivals and established brand names, seeing a pipeline so effective in nurturing new voices is a breath of fresh air.

But here’s something you might not know: aside from the main performances, BEAM2025 includes a series of panel discussions featuring producers, directors, and industry insiders who share insights on everything from funding a fledgling musical to marketing it for a global audience. Some of these talks have been known to spark fierce debates—discussions about equitable representation, for instance, or the tightrope walk between commercial viability and artistic innovation. For theatre aficionados, being in that room can feel almost as thrilling as the performances themselves. It’s a laboratory of ideas, a place where you glimpse the raw sparks that may ignite the next big phenomenon.

The Bigger Impact

Natalia Scorer, executive director of Mercury Musical Developments, hits the nail on the head when she says: “The connections and conversations that happen in these two days are vital for sustaining a vibrant and dynamic new musical theatre sector in the UK.” In essence, BEAM doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s one cog in a creative machine, and those cogs have begun turning at unprecedented speed over the last few years. The record number of pitches—356 musicals—shows just how eager writers and composers are to have their stories heard, and how fervently audiences are seeking fresh narratives.

And let’s be honest: these days, we could all use a bit of positivity. Musical theatre holds a unique power to bring people together, singing and clapping in unison (and maybe shedding a tear or two). Getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse of that process, even for a couple of days, reaffirms that creativity thrives despite a world of uncertainty. That’s the intangible magic that sets BEAM2025 apart from your average festival.

Final Curtain Call

As we edge closer to 15 May, there’s an undercurrent of excitement I can’t quite describe—like the promise of opening a gift when you have no clue what’s inside. It might be silly. It might be heart-wrenching. It might be the next big thing. You’ll never know unless you’re there, surrounded by the hum of possibility and the occasional swirl of confetti.

BEAM2025 is co-produced by Musical Theatre Network and Mercury Musical Developments, in association with Birmingham Hippodrome, with funding from Arts Council England and PRS Foundation. Tickets are already on sale, and if you’re the sort of person who believes in the future of musical theatre—and maybe even wants to help shape it—this is one rendezvous you absolutely cannot miss.

So whether you come for the chance to mingle with creative luminaries or simply to relish the exuberance of new musicals, one truth stands out: BEAM2025 is where history might just be made. It’s a reminder that the next generation of hits doesn’t materialise out of thin air. They’re nurtured, championed, and eventually catapulted onto the world stage by events like this one. And if that doesn’t send a thrill up your spine, you might need to check your pulse—because this is the lifeblood of theatre’s tomorrow.
