Beaches, A New Musical will close on Broadway this month after failing to secure any Tony Award nominations.
The production will play its final performance at the Majestic Theatre on May 24, ending its Broadway run after 28 previews and 38 regular performances.
The musical began previews on March 27 and officially opened on April 22. Since then, the show has reportedly struggled at the box office, with ticket sales unable to sustain the costs of the Broadway production. Reviews were mixed, and the musical was shut out when Tony nominations were announced.
Based on Iris Rainer Dart’s 1985 novel, Beaches follows the lifelong friendship of two women from very different backgrounds. The story is best known to many audiences through the 1988 film adaptation starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey.
The Broadway production stars Jessica Vosk as Cee Cee Bloom and Kelli Barrett as Bertie White. The cast also includes Sarah Bockel, Harper Burns, Eric Coles, Taylor Sage Evans, Mia Gerachis, Zeya Grace, Joelle Gully, Ben Jacoby, Stephanie Martignetti, Emma Ogea, Olive Ross-Kline, Bailey Ryon, Paul Adam Schaefer, Samantha Schwartz, Brent Thiessen, Lael Van Keuren and Zurin Villanueva.
Producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso said the creative team remained proud of the company and the emotional response the show had received from audiences. She also confirmed plans to bring the musical to wider audiences through a national tour.
Beaches is co-directed by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart. Producers include Maloney-Prezioso, Ryan Bogner and Tracey McFarland for Broadway & Beyond Theatricals, Alison Spiriti and Justin Sudds for Right Angle Entertainment, and Douglas McJannet for Arden Entertainment.
Plans are currently underway for a national tour of Beaches, which is expected to launch in 2027.
While its Broadway run will be brief, the musical’s producers are positioning the show for a future beyond New York, with hopes that its story of friendship, love and loss will connect with audiences across America.
