Anna Louizos, who built Broadway worlds for AVENUE Q and IN THE HEIGHTS, dies aged 69

Anna Louizos, the Broadway scenic designer whose work shaped the theatrical neighbourhoods of AVENUE Q and IN THE HEIGHTS, died aged 69 on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. Across more than four decades, Louizos progressed from backstage construction and assistant positions to lead assignments spanning scenery, costumes and projections. Her designs reached stages beyond New York, including Australia, while AVENUE Q and IN THE HEIGHTS became the clearest demonstrations of her ability to turn a neighbourhood into an active part of a musical’s storytelling.

Playbill reported that she initially pursued acting at Mills College and New York University, but discovered an affinity for building scenery through backstage work. The practical demands of construction drew her towards design. She then assisted established designers, gaining the technical and collaborative experience that preceded her move into lead Broadway assignments.

IBDB records her Broadway support credits beginning with THE CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARTIAL in 1983 and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. ABBOTT! in 1987. Assistant and associate work followed on THE RED SHOES, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, TALLER THAN A DWARF and UNCLE VANYA. She also worked as an assistant art director on THE COSBY SHOW. Her first lead Broadway scenic-design assignments arrived in 2003 with AVENUE Q and GOLDA’S BALCONY.

Because the musical’s scale made a revolving streetscape impractical, Louizos and the creative team developed a single weathered building that could keep the action compact without making the setting static. The solution gave the puppets and performers a coherent street address while allowing scenes to appear quickly from within it.

For IN THE HEIGHTS, Louizos began with close observation of Washington Heights. Playbill reported that she walked through the neighbourhood with director Thomas Kail and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, then returned to photograph architectural details for the Broadway streetscape. Those visits supplied a record of facades, street-level textures and alterations accumulated over time. Her design used that specific visual material rather than reducing the setting to a generic New York block, grounding the musical’s community in a recognisable built environment.

Her IN THE HEIGHTS design earned Louizos her second Tony nomination for Best Scenic Design of a Musical in 2008.
