Aly Michalka and Spencer Sutherland set separate Broadway debuts in & JULIET

Aly Michalka and Spencer Sutherland will make their Broadway debuts in the continuing production of & JULIET at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, arriving on separate dates during a busy autumn of company changes. The casting was publicly announced on 26 August 2026. Sutherland begins as Romeo on 15 September, while Michalka takes over as Anne on 3 November. Anne is the musical’s version of Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare’s wife, not the contemporary film actor who shares her name.

The performers enter two established tracks. Broadway.com reports that Sutherland succeeds Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo, while Michalka follows Alison Luff, who is scheduled to give her final performance as Anne on 1 November. Michalka’s first scheduled performance follows Luff’s final appearance by two calendar days. The announcement establishes two individual Broadway debuts rather than a joint opening for the incoming performers.

The Romeo succession follows a notably quick sequence of changes. AussieTheatre reported that Walker returned to the role on 13 August 2026, after Liam Pearce gave his final performance on 9 August. The announcement of Sutherland on 26 August came 13 days after Walker’s return and set another handover for 15 September. No producer explanation for the latest change, or confirmed final performance date for Walker, has been announced.

For Michalka, the booking brings a career across popular music, television and film to Broadway. She is one half of Aly & AJ, the duo credited in her official production biography with six studio albums. The biography lists SILVER DELIVERER as their latest album and includes PHIL OF THE FUTURE, EASY A, HELLCATS and IZOMBIE among her screen work. The production identifies the engagement as her Broadway debut, not as a stage or musical-theatre debut. Her prepared statement, published with the announcement, framed the role as a chance to draw together her experience in music, film and television.

Sutherland arrives with a parallel mix of recording, touring and screen work. His official production biography describes him as a singer-songwriter, actor and performer, cites his 2024 album THE DRAMA, and lists AFTERLIFE OF THE PARTY and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER among his screen appearances. In a prepared statement reported by BroadwayWorld, he characterised reaching Broadway as a major personal milestone. Romeo will be his first Broadway role.

The available announcement material includes prepared comments from the performers, but no producer, director or other creative-team explanation of the casting decisions.

The two bookings form part of a broader autumn reshuffle. BroadwayWorld reports that Megan Kane is returning from 7 September through 3 January 2027. Kenzie Ziegler and Anthony Gargiula are due to join the company on 15 September, the day Sutherland starts, while Jeannette Bayardelle returns from 15 September through 4 October. These are separate arrivals and return engagements, not a single relaunch of the Broadway company.

The schedule also includes a Z100-partnered Fan Night on 24 September at 7.00pm. That event falls after Sutherland’s scheduled first performance but before Michalka is due to enter the production, another practical reminder that the pair’s casting should not be treated as a shared opening.

At the centre of & JULIET is an alternative path for the heroine of ROMEO AND JULIET, with Juliet choosing a new life after Romeo. The musical has a book by David West Read and uses songs written or co-written by Max Martin. Luke Sheppard directs and Jennifer Weber choreographs. That established framework remains unchanged as the latest performers move into existing roles.

The Broadway production opened at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on 17 November 2022 and received nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. Its current cast movement is replacement casting within that continuing run, rather than a revival, transfer or new production. The official ticket calendar, which extends into January 2027, also indicates that the announcement is not connected to a closing notice.

Australian audiences already know the title through the local production that opened at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in February 2023. AussieTheatre has more recently followed Walker’s return to Romeo and Ziegler’s forthcoming Broadway debut in the same company. Michalka and Sutherland’s engagements are a distinct development within that continuing story, adding two newly confirmed Broadway debuts and another change in the Romeo track. No connection between these appointments and an Australian or other international company has been announced.

BroadwayWorld has described both new bookings as limited engagements, but no final performance date has been announced for either performer. Sutherland’s undisclosed departure date also means the production has not guaranteed that he and Michalka will appear together. The available announcements do not name their successors or address possible extensions. For now, the confirmed practical markers are the separate starting dates, the Stephen Sondheim Theatre and an ongoing ticket calendar into the new year; the duration of each debut engagement remains open.
