The Broadway musical adaptation of 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU is scheduled to begin previews on 17 August 2027, according to Billboard, giving the project its first firm performance date since it was announced in 2025. The update takes 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU from Broadway development to a reported, dated engagement. It does not set an opening night: 17 August is identified as the first preview, while the theatre and official opening remain unannounced.
The official production announcement, dated 23 April 2025, said Mike Bosner was developing a Broadway musical based on the 1999 Touchstone Pictures film. It established the Broadway intent, producing structure and principal creative team, but attached no firm performance date or venue. AussieTheatre covered that development in April 2025, before an engagement had been scheduled. Early coverage referred to a possible 2026 Broadway bow, but that timing was tentative. The newly reported timetable supersedes that possibility and should not be read as the cancellation of a fixed 2026 booking. The new report is therefore a scheduling update to an existing adaptation, rather than a second announcement of the project.
The musical’s score is being written by Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Gruska. Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang are the announced book writers. This four-person structure is the complete writing team identified in the official announcement. Jepsen and Dunham are involved as writers, not announced performers, and the available sources do not establish either as a member of the cast.
Christopher Wheeldon is announced as director and choreographer, placing both the staging and choreography under his leadership. Tom Kitt is handling music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations. Bosner is producing by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical. That arrangement is the production’s identified connection between the new stage musical and the Touchstone film property.
Development became publicly visible again through casting activity in July 2026. A Playbill Equity notice sought actors for 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU and scheduled auditions for 15 July 2026. It repeated the announced score and book credits, clearly tying the call to the adaptation. The notice establishes that actor recruitment was under way before the August scheduling report, but not what came from the process. It did not name appointments, and the accessible reliable sources do not establish a principal cast.
Billboard is currently the source for the August preview date. The material available to AussieTheatre did not include an official production website or producer release carrying the date, so it remains attributed to that report. The official 2025 announcement and Playbill casting notice establish the creative and casting chronology, but neither confirms the 2027 start.
Several practical elements of the Broadway engagement remain open. No theatre or official opening night has been established in the accessible reporting. A ticket on-sale date, authorised ticketing outlet and performance schedule beyond the reported first preview are also unannounced. There are no verified details of any reading, workshop or pre-Broadway tryout, so none should be inferred from the audition notice. Preview performances and an official opening are separate points in a Broadway production’s calendar. The 17 August date supplies the former only and cannot be used to infer when opening night will occur.
The musical is based on the 1999 Touchstone Pictures film written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith. Its Shakespearean basis and association with Australian actor Heath Ledger give the adaptation a clear point of interest for Australian audiences, although Broadway is the only production destination established by the available material. The available sources establish no Australian production, touring or licensing plan.
The next substantive milestones are now a theatre, an official opening date and a cast, followed by the ticketing information needed to turn the reported start date into a complete Broadway engagement.
