WICKED returns down under: A tribute to John Frost’s theatrical legacy

As the emerald lights of the iconic musical WICKED prepare to shine once more on Thursday 7th September, the anticipation and excitement amongst theatre-goers is palpable. With its themes of friendship, love, and the challenges of societal expectations, WICKED has, over the years, become a cultural touchstone for many. As the Sydney Lyric Theatre becomes the latest stage to be graced by this international sensation, it’s impossible to talk about the production without discussing the force behind its Australasian resurgence: John Frost.

Australia’s most acclaimed theatre producer, John Frost’s journey from a humble dresser at the age of 16 to an international theatre mogul is the stuff of legends. With nearly 200 productions under his belt, from the heartfelt ‘Night Mother’ to the vivacious ‘Grease – The Arena Spectacular!’, Frost’s midas touch is evident. Perhaps most emblematic of his success is the 1996 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical on Broadway, awarded to The Gordon Frost Organisation’s production of ‘The King and I’. This marked an international recognition of an unparalleled talent in theatre production.

For those privileged enough to attend last week’s Sydney media call, the grandeur of WICKED was on full display. The lavish sets and resplendent costumes, which John Frost had previously described as a “feast for the eye and the ear”, lived up to every word. Photographs from the media call vividly captured the sheer scale and spectacle of the production. From Elphaba’s striking green visage to Glinda’s bubbly charm, the images encapsulate the magic that awaits audiences on opening night.

 

 

In his illustrious career, Frost has not only championed large-scale musicals but has also provided platforms for plays that delve deep into the human experience. His productions have ranged from the Tony Award-winning ‘Art’ to the National Theatre of Great Britain’s celebrated rendition of ‘An Inspector Calls’. It’s no wonder then that in 2014, for his extraordinary contributions to the live entertainment and performing arts industry, he was honoured with the J.C. Williamson Award. The following year, Frost was also bestowed with an Order of Australia, marking yet another pinnacle in a life dedicated to the arts.

WICKED, at its core, is a tale of two women, different yet so similar, navigating a world that’s often unkind to those who dare to be different. As John Frost brings this tale to Sydney, it is more than just a musical. It’s a celebration of Frost’s legacy, of the transformative power of theatre, and of stories that continue to resonate, regardless of time and place.
