Inside the new Australian tour of The Sound of Music: we talk to the cast – Cameron Daddo

The well loved musical, The Sound of Music, will commence in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre on 13 December this year, followed by a season at Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre from 11 March, 2016. We sat down with the cast for a quick chat about the show and will feature our interviews on AussieTheatre.

John Frost announced the stellar cast of this acclaimed production this week.

“We have assembled a sensational cast to play these iconic roles. Cameron Daddo will be a wonderfully strong and stern Captain, and Amy Lehpamer, already with several musical roles to her name, will leap to stardom as Maria.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Marina Prior again, and to bring Lorraine Bayly to musical theatre audiences.

“And we’re especially pleased to bring acclaimed opera star Jacqui Dark to the musical stage.”

We chatted to the wonderful cast about this exciting upcoming production and what they’re all looking forward to about it.

CAMERON DADDO

On watching the musical for the first time:

“I knew it was an iconic, well-known show, and I knew the music. But I’d never seen it in actual sequential context. I sat down and watched the movie with my family, and then on my own. I’ve got 3 kids and they all really liked it. My wife is a huge fan. She’s very excited. She has a love of music, we both do – she’s a listener. The kids have that from her.”

On preparing for the role:

“I’m studying the captain’s career as a submarine commander. It’s fascinating, because for me that informs where he is and why he is the way he is at the beginning of the show. That helps me to understand his coldness and detachment, which is obviously partly to do with the loss of his wife but also the remnants of a career in a killing machine.”

On what he’s looking forward to:

“I’m excited about working with the cast. And about being up on stage in this kind of project. I’ve heard many descriptions like ‘the most well-loved musical’, ‘the best musical’, and quite frankly, I’m at a loss as to why I had never seen it before. It just wasn’t on my radar. I’m excited to delve deeper into that.”

On The Sound of Music:

“I think people relate to it because on one level you have this gorgeous score, and underneath it you have this incredible gravitas of story, which is the backbone, which people can hang off. These people are really fighting for their lives and their integrity and there’s this beautiful music behind it all.”
