Australian Theatre Live (ATL) has just launched a new subscription platform for digital theatre experiences. Working with some of the country’s best live entertainers, ATL is succeeding in making Australian art more accessible to all.
With a growing content library of mainstage and independent theatre, opera, dance, acrobatics and music, Australian Theatre Live captures live performance for you to enjoy on your schedule.
Grant Dodwell, Creative Director of ATL said
People often have this perception that recorded theatre is not as enjoyable as the live thing. However, due to the beautiful camera angles and crisp sound quality, our films offer a level of intimacy beyond that of the usual audience member’s experience. Watching an Australian Theatre Live film is like watching a play from on the stage.
The current catalog includes some iconic pieces of Australian theatre, including Michael Gow’s Away (Malthouse/STC), Katherine Thomson’s Diving for Pearls (Griffin Theatre Company), and Louis Nowra’s This Much Is True (Red Line Productions), but also features classics like as The Taming of the Shrew (produced by Queensland Theatre Company). The majority of content currently is Australian written and produced, which marks a refreshing change from the existing catalog of filmed theatre available, often from the U.S. or U.K. Having seen Away in its Malthouse season, it was a joy to be able to relive the magic of such a brilliant production.
While the site is still in its infancy, it is clear that it will grow into an incredibly important platform for Australian theatre lovers. With new productions being added every month, there will surely be something for everyone. There is an excitement in knowing that ATL will act as a platform to showcase Australian theatre, ultimately making it more accessible. One can only hope it grows to amass a catalog that rivals that of National Theatre Live.
