Comedy Gold: He Said She Said debuts at Powerhouse Wonderland Festival

When two comedians get married, love can be a funny thing…

Two comedians from rival radio stations on the same stage at the same time. The twist? They’re married… to each other.

For the first time in their 10 years of marriage, comedians Stav Davidson (Hit105) and wife Kat (612 ABC Brisbane) will take to the stand up comedy stage at the same time, sharing the best and worst moments of their love story (from his and her perspective) in their debut show He Said She Said.

Kat took time out with Bobbi-Lea from Aussie Theatre.com to talk about life, love, and stand-up comedy from a girl’s perspective.

She Said…

While both Stav and Kat were often billed at the same comedy gig, one was either the MC or the supporting act or headline, but the pair have never performed together. So, when asked how the show came about, Kat said the idea came fairly organically, “We thought: ‘wouldn’t it be fun to be able to respond immediately’. And then we did nothing about it. Then Christopher Wayne (aka The Naked Magicians) came along and said, ‘let’s do it’.”

When it came down to the details, Kat said, “While Stav is the big picture person, I need to know the structure. He comes up with genius on the fly which is really annoying, and then Chris got the business side rolling.”

While most people would shy away from the terrifying vulnerability and lack the sheer balls it takes to be a stand-up comedian, Kat sees it more as therapy.

“You re-evaluate all your life choices with microphone and a spotlight”, she said. Then adds, “it’s an addictive rush.”

Kat says her own special brand of comedy is “observational and very story driven” and she finds a real, “genuine joy” in people.

“People are funniest when they don’t mean to be, so I like to tell stories that are relate-able and true,” she said.

When asked about Stav’s special blend of comedy, Kat takes a slight detour and recalls how they first met, “My friends said there’s a guy who started stand-up, I think you two will get along.”

“I decided he was hot and he decided I was terrifying.”

Talking further about Kat’s career, you quickly realise this is one busy, super-smart, uber-talented woman – comedian, radio host and producer, stand-up teacher at QUT, journalism teacher at Griffith, wife, mother, and all-round rockin’ chick.

As a teacher of stand-up at QUT, I asked Kat what advice she would give for any budding funny man or woman out there.

“Watch lots of comedy live and online, let it sink in, don’t try to be anyone else, write what you know, speak from your truth, and try to take advice -it will save you time.”

Kat and Stav’s debut show He Said She Said is sure to have something for everyone.

“Whether you’re a guy or a girl, there’s going to be something in it for you. There’s a lot of pathos and ethos in the world and the show just allows you to kick your shoes off. It’s a lovely way to spend an hour just hanging out”, Kat promises.

In short, “It won’t suck.”
