Hans the Boy Wonder of Berlin makes Sydney debut

After a sold out season at the Spiegeltent at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival and an acclaimed show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Hans the Boy Wonder of Berlin is hitting the big smoke.

Get ready Sydney; this is a Beyonce-style song and dance spectacular on a Jessica Mauboy budget. Ben Nielsen caught up with Hans, ahead of his Sydney debut…

Hans – Like A German

The accordion is a pretty unusual instrument – what made you start playing?

Whether you’re religious or not, it’s pretty obvious that my accordion talents are a gift from beyond. It always just came very naturally to me. I remember the warm sensation when I pumped my first box and I just thought to myself…I’m home!

Your costumes rival Kylie & Gaga. Where do you find such fabulous garments?

Kylie has D&G, Gaga is in bed with Versace… I have my mother sewing my costumes. And who wears it best? I think it’s pretty obvious!

You can do the splits between two chairs, but what other secret talents do you possess?

Oh darling, there isn’t much I can’t do. From my tapping skills, to my rapping skills… I am practically a one man Cirque du Soleil.

Kransky or strudel?

Honey… I stopped experimenting with strudel back in High School.

In his trademark fishnets and hot pants, Hans has become a favourite of stars around the world including Pink, Fergie and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. In June, he will take over the Hayes Theatre Co, with his show Like a German. Along with his dancers, the Lucky Bitches, and band, the Ungrateful Bastards, it’s sure to be a riotous, glittery romp.
