The Book Of Mormon: Beyond Belief

Following their enormous success at the 65th Annual Tony Awards last week, I thought it more than apt to feature The Book Of Mormon as my top “Must Listen” new musical pick this week.

As if 9 Tony Awards wasn’t enough, The Book of Mormon has broken records beyond belief! This week, the Original Broadway Cast recording has ranked 3rd on the American Billboard Charts, making it the highest charting Broadway cast album – and first top 10 – since 1969, when Hair spent 13 consecutive weeks in the top spot.

It is also boasting the largest sales week (61, 000 sales) for any cast album since data tracking began in 1991. (The previous record was held by the original London Cast Recording of Phantom Of The Opera, selling 54 000 copies over Christmas in 1992).

The Album debuted on the chart 3 weeks ago at No. 31 with 13 000 sales as a digital download album. After being released as a physical CD, (on June 7) and after winning 9 of it’s 14 Tony Award Nominations, the album is up 2116% at 61 000 copies sold.

The show was written by South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone andAvenue Q co-writer, Robert Lopez, and is well worth a listen.

The UK Guardian Observer have hailed the show as: “a good old-fashioned song-and-dance spectacle that happens to include wildly offensive jokes about Aids in Africa and the theological kitsch that is Mormonism.”

A song for the ladies:

There aren’t a lot of numbers for women in this show, but girls have a look at: Baptize Me – The Book of Mormon (Original Broadway Cast Recording) – a duet

Also have a look at: Sal Tlay Ka Siti – The Book of Mormon (Original Broadway Cast Recording) sung by Tony Award winning actres Nikki M. James

And for the Men:

Check out the main song: I Believe – The Book of Mormon (Original Broadway Cast Recording) see Andrew Rannell’s performance of this number at the Tony Awards below

Also worth a mention: You and Me (But Mostly Me) – The Book of Mormon (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
