Sweet Charity – Fandango Girls

Sweet Charity is just one of those shows you can’t help but enjoy, no matter how many times you’ve seen it, and with Cait Gregor in the title role of Queensland Musical Theatre’s production, the show was assured success.

After an opening night technical hiccup with the lighting at the beginning, the show eased into a joyous celebration of all that music theatre stands for.

With Fosse-esque choreography, and big broadwa

y showstopper numbers such as ‘Big Spender’ and ‘The Rhythm of Life’, the show was vibrant and energetic.

I especially loved the trio ‘There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This’ with the lead girls from the Fandago Dance Hall. Kathleen Simmonds’ characterization really shone as the wise-cracking Nickie and Danika Saal’s voice was extraordinary.

Tony Campbell as Oscar, was endearing to watch. The elevator scene is perhaps the best scene in the show and Tony used his comedic talents here to great effect.

Under the direction of Jemma Lanyon (and Musical Direction of Julie Whiting), Sweet Charity was a solid production by the Queensland Musical Theatre society.
