Your Sunday Afternoon Zen: Paul Capsis and ‘Natural Woman’

It’s Sunday afternoon in winter: we could all do with some warming up, so let’s showcase someone exuding warmth: national treasure Paul Capsis.

Paul Capsis.
Paul Capsis.

A wonder of a performer in cabaret, musical theatre, plays, and a little bit of everything, Capsis is star quality personified.

There’s a curious vulnerability underneath his rich sense of abandon and it’s that kind of complexity that makes him so watchable and so listenable.

Recently, Capsis played the Lion in Belvoir’s The Wizard of Oz, and appeared in the Sydney and Melbourne seasons of the Helpmann award nominated Calpurnia Descending.

After seeing the latter, I wrote that “Capsis embraces his inner twisted crone; there’s something magical about him, even when [his character] is brittle and drunk and dark.”

But there’s nothing dark about this video – just magic. (That last moment!) Here’s Paul Capsis singing “Natural Woman.”

Happy Sunday.
