William Shakespeare’s Hamlet

AVID Theatre & Ardour Theatre present William Shakespeare’s masterpiece The Tragedy of HAMLET, Prince of Denmark, a modern re-telling of one of the most influential and well-known plays in history.

HAMLET will be a multi-sensory theatre experience played under the dreamlike glow of candlelight and neon in a brutally minimalist, awe-inspiring performance space; Mycelium Studios, East Brunswick.

A court in turmoil. A family fractured. Scandal, surveillance and fake news; welcome to the fast and furious arena sport that is Hamlet!

Is it a thrilling ghost story? An exuberant romp about theatre and actors? A harrowing dissection of an abusive relationship? An introspective meditation on our very existence? A black comedy about the nature of mortality? Is it a drama of revenge and betrayal? Or is it an adventure story about pirates? It’s all of these things. Avid Theatre and Ardour Productions have assembled a stellar creative team who have been tasked with the wonderful challenge to wrestle these seemingly disparate elements into one whole.

No stranger to the text, having played the title role in 1999 for Adelaide’s Independent Theatre, Director Nicholas Opolski brings a vigorous and muscular intent to this interpretation.

Opolski:

We watch HAMLET because at times we have felt like him, conflicted in our motives, unsure of our next step. Victim, yes, but guilty ourselves. Hamlet struggles to understand his place in a confused world, as we sometimes do, but shows us how, in spite of everything, it is possible to find peace of mind.

Michael Fenemore (The Elephant Man, Macbeth, A Streetcar Named Desire) will play HAMLET, Charlee Liddell as Ophelia, Alayne Wright (Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Anthony Edward are the Danish royals Gertrude and Claudius, with Don Nichols (Romeo & Juliet) as the scheming Polonius.

This HAMLET promises to be a visceral, emotional and existential rollercoaster!
