The yet-to-be-nominated, Helpmann-less Trevor Ashley (Hairspray, Priscilla) plays Natalie Portly, a ballet dancer with body dysmorphia who dreams of being a star. Playing at the Reginald Theatre (Seymour Centre, Sydney) from December 7-17, this parody of the dark and psychologically disturbing film Black Swan is, according to the comedic Ashley “everything the film was… only with songs, audience participation and men dressed up as women”.
Can Natalie Portly overcome the obstacles of a psychotic mother, the choreographer from hell, and a lesbian ballerina with a dark side and make it out the other end alive? Well, no actually but that’s showbiz, Kid. Written by Phil Scott, Fat Swan is a laugh-a-minute musical romp with an all-star cast featuring Tara Morice (Strictly Ballroom, Dance Academy), Lisa Adam (Jersey Boys, Rocky Horror) and Brendan Moar (Host of TV’s The Renovators), together with a fabulous live band. The world of ballet can be dangerous. Between pink pointe shoes, tutus and tulle lies the brutal truth that people would actually kill for a role.
Fat Swan takes you deep into the heart-rending, heel-chafing, toe-bleeding, self-harming world of ballet – and will surely make you wonder what your mother did with your old pointe shoes.
