Sydney tells its stories through verbatim theatre

Verbatim Theatre is a powerful medium – it can level the playing field of humanity, remove barriers and filters and blast away judgments and preconceptions.

Verbatim Theatre is a powerful medium – it can level the playing field of humanity, remove barriers and filters and blast away judgments and preconceptions.

Some of the most powerful theatre ever produced uses real stories and real people’s words in a theatrical context. Think Aftershocks (about the 1989 Newcastle earthquake), The Laramie Project (taken from interviews after the Laramie murder, USA), Aftermath (stories from Iraqi refugees in Jordan) and now Sydney Stories – premiering in Kings Cross this month.

From the team that brought you Stories from the Wayside, this compelling new play will open at the Darlinghurst Theatre (19 Greenknowe Ave, Potts Point) on Wednesday 23 November and play until Sunday 27th November.

Created by Dean Carey and featuring cast from the Actors Centre Australia, Sydney Stories investigates the fascination we have with overhearing someone else’s conversations – whether it be through a two-way mirror, being a ‘fly on the wall’, or overhearing someone else’s crossed-line phone conversation.

“This is an amazing array of Sydney characters and incredible stories that capture the true fabric of individual lives which will level and activate the audiences’ humanity. This premier event captures the extraordinary, the unique, the profane and the serene – but who’s to judge? These are simply real people and their stories – uncensored and let loose. Join us for an exhilarating evening celebrating unforgettable Sydney…” Dean Carey, Creator & Director
