Queensland Theatre’s Reconciliation Action Plan

Relationships, Respect and Opportunities – these are the key objectives set out by the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) that was launched by Wesley Enoch this March, and who better than the ground-breaking Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) team, winners of the 2013 QLD Premier’s Reconciliation Award, to lead the charge toward lasting change.

The RAP is the first of its kind for a state theatre company in Australia and sets out a range of strategies around artistic programs, audience development, employment pathways, partnerships and cultural awareness. Enoch says, “We aim to be a national leader in reconciliation, demonstrating this through the creation and presentation of theatre as well as meaningful action, how true reconciliation can be achieved between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader community.”

The development of the 2015-2018 RAP has involved consultation with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (including QTC’s Indigenous Reference Group), Board members, Executive and senior staff, employees and key stakeholders.

As there is no major Aboriginal &Torres Strait performing arts company in Queensland, QTC has stepped into the role of providing opportunities for these artists. The Indigenous Program (that won them the 2013 Premier’s Award) was launched in 2011 and QTC has since gone from presenting zero indigenous works to showcasing two or more large-scale indigenous productions per year.
