Oscar Wilde’s ‘Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime’ Opens This Weekend At The Genesian Theatre

The sparkling wit and wisdom of Oscar Wilde can be found at The Genesian Theatre from this weekend with the opening of his comedy LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME. It promises all the Wildean signatures we have come to expect, from brilliant repartee to clever social satire.

As Genesian Theatre President, Barry Nielsen :

Written by Constance Cox, LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME is based on an 1890s story by Oscar Wilde that follows a hilariously misguided quest to commit the “perfect crime”.AŌer a couple of serious ouƟngs in our new venue, it’s a delight to offer something completely silly!.

Lord Arthur Savile is happily due to be married to his lovely fiancée, Sybil Merton but his plans take a decidedly dark comedic turn. Lady Julia Merton, his future mother-in-law, is less than enthusiastic about the romantic match and employs her fortune-teller to find out if there are any indiscreƟons in Arthur’s past and future.

This “palm reader” confidentially tells Arthur they see murder ahead! Arthur decides that the only logical course of acƟon is to try and get this dreadfully embarrassing act out of the way before his wedding in three weeks.

Ɵme. Will Arthur be able to successfully commit a murder or must he resign himself to the fact he can never marry his beloved Sybil? Director Molly Haddon sees this deliciously dark story as “classic Wilde: charming, outrageous, and just a little bit sinister.

As someone who has adored Wilde’ work for as long as I can remember, directing this play has been a dream project. One that combines his sharp wit, his playful disdain for social convention, and his gift for turning absurdity into art.

It is foretold that LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME will be an evening of manners, mayhem and
marvellous mischief – we hope to see you there!
