Opera Superstar Nicole Car returns to Melbourne

Opera Australia is set to bring a dazzling celebration of Giuseppe Verdi’s music to Melbourne’s Hamer Hall with two exclusive VERDI GALA Gala concerts, taking place on 30 April and 3 May. Headlining these special performances is celebrated Australian soprano Nicole Car, who makes a triumphant return to her hometown alongside her husband, distinguished French-Canadian baritone Étienne Dupuis.

These concerts serve as a thrilling successor to last year’s sold-out Puccini tribute, where Car captivated audiences with her profound emotional range and luminous vocal artistry. Now, attention turns to Verdi—one of Italy’s most enduring composers—whose operatic masterpieces continue to rank among the most frequently performed works on the global stage.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Car has swiftly ascended to the pinnacle of international opera, praised for her versatility in repertoire ranging from Mozart to modern-day premieres. Equally lauded is Dupuis, who has earned accolades for what The New York Times describes as his “suave, empathetic baritone” and “refined, charismatic” stage presence. Together, they bring a remarkable synergy to the Verdi canon, blending dramatic fervour with vocal refinement.

In addition, acclaimed West Australian tenor Paul O’Neill joins the star-studded cast. Having garnered experience and praise from audiences across Europe and Australasia, O’Neill injects fresh dynamism into every role he undertakes. Hosting both concerts is Greta Bradman, who will guide the audience through Verdi’s majestic sound world—one teeming with beloved arias, stirring choruses, and a few lesser-known gems that seldom grace Australian stages.

Accompanying the singers is the renowned Orchestra Victoria, led by one of the nation’s foremost conductors, Alexander Briger. Expect the full splendour of Verdi’s musical tapestry to unfold under Briger’s baton, highlighting the composer’s flair for both delicate lyricism and grand, sweeping drama. From the passionate strains of LA TRAVIATA to the solemn majesty of NABUCCO (and beyond), the Gala will pay homage to a composer whose influence on opera is immeasurable.

These concerts not only mark the homecoming of a much-loved Australian soprano but also stand as a tribute to Verdi’s enduring ability to stir the soul. Opera enthusiasts can look forward to an immersive evening that celebrates the grandeur of the Italian operatic tradition—its romance, pathos, and sheer vocal fireworks—brought vividly to life by some of the finest voices in contemporary opera.
