New look for Wizard Of Oz

All time favourite Broadway and Hollywood hit, The Wizard of Oz, is coming to Sydney in a re-imagined production presented by Hornsby Musical Society.

All time favourite Broadway and Hollywood hit, The Wizard of Oz, is coming to Sydney in a re-imagined production presented by Hornsby Musical Society.

The Wizard of Oz is a classic musical based on L. Frank Baum’s much-loved fairy tale. This Royal Shakespeare Company stage production closely follows the familiar 1939 MGM film version starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr. Featuring classic songs such as ‘Ding Dong The Witch is Dead’, ‘If I Only Had A Brain’, ‘We’re Off To See The Wizard’ and ‘Over The Rainbow’, The Wizard of Oz is a fable that portrays what the human spirit can achieve when blessed with friendship, self-discovery and hope.

Director Alan Duncan says that Hornsby Musical Society production will stay true to the core spirit and values that has made The Wizard of Oz such an iconic part of our consciousness.

“However, we will also be making bold updates to the presentation of the show to give it vibrancy, impact and relevance for 21st Century audiences,” he said.

“The fantastic, dream-like Utopian/Dystopian nature of the Land of Oz will be presented through the use of multi-media imagery while acting and music will be seamlessly integrated into the performance – just add courage, heart and brains!”

The show follows up HMS’ recent hit productions of Curtains, Leader of the Pack, Little Shop of Horrors and Shout! The Story of Johnny O’Keefe.

With direction by Alan D. Duncan, musical direction by Steven Kreamer, choreography by Julia McKean/ Holley Stevely and production design by NIDA student, David Cherrie, The Wizard of Oz features Kris Fenessy, Kristie Gibson, Chloe Horne, Brendan Paul, Sue Reed, David Roberts,Lynda Sanders, Rowan Scott, Barry Sykes and Michelle Waters as well as a large and colourful ensemble of Munchkins, Winkies and winged monkeys!

The show opens at Hornsby RSL on April 1. Bookings: (02) 9477 7777.
