Musicals Set for Film Adaptations: A Stage-to-Screen Renaissance

The magic of the stage has long captivated audiences, but when Broadway’s brilliance transitions to the silver screen, the excitement takes on a new dimension. Following the roaring success of Wicked, a plethora of musicals are poised for their cinematic close-up. Here’s the lowdown on the most promising contenders for your next favorite movie musical.

Wicked: For Good

The wait for Wicked’s cinematic sequel is agonizing, but the anticipation is warranted. Returning to the land of Oz, For Good picks up where the first film left off, navigating Elphaba and Glinda’s evolving friendship and the fallout of their actions. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the sequel teases some explosive new songs and scenes that promise to expand the franchise’s lore. With Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprising their roles, and the dazzling Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, this film has blockbuster written all over it. Mark your calendars for November 21, 2025!

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Jon M. Chu continues his streak of musical mastery with a new take on Joseph. Known for his visual flair, Chu’s adaptation promises to marry the whimsical charm of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score with dazzling cinematic spectacle. With a screenplay by Dana Fox, this Amazon Studios production could breathe new life into this family favorite while introducing the beloved tale to a new generation.

Guys and Dolls (Reported)

Can anyone live up to Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra? If Rob Marshall’s rumored Guys and Dolls adaptation sees the light of day, it might just meet the challenge. Marshall’s direction could lend the classic musical a contemporary vibrancy while staying true to its roots. Fans of the original will be watching closely, and newcomers are in for a treat if this project moves forward.

Merrily We Roll Along

Stephen Sondheim’s notoriously challenging Merrily We Roll Along is not only being adapted but is also embracing a daring production timeline, echoing its reverse-chronological narrative. Richard Linklater’s ambitious decision to film over 20 years is a testament to the material’s depth. With Paul Mescal, Ben Platt, and Beanie Feldstein leading the charge, the project is a tantalizing puzzle waiting to unfold. Patience will be key, but if anyone can redefine what it means to adapt a musical, it’s Linklater.

Shucked (Reported)

Shucked charmed Broadway with its quirky humor and homespun appeal, and now it’s set to win over film audiences. With Robert Horn penning the screenplay and music by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, this adaptation promises to bring the heartfelt hilarity of the stage show to life. A film version could give this sleeper hit the global recognition it deserves.

On Your Feet! (Reported)

Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s story is made for the big screen. On Your Feet! celebrates their musical journey with vibrant energy and iconic hits like “Rhythm is Gonna Get You.” Under Lissette Feliciano’s direction, this adaptation could deliver a feel-good, toe-tapping cinematic experience.

Kiss of the Spider Woman

Few musicals have the dramatic gravitas of Kiss of the Spider Woman, and the upcoming film adaptation promises to revive the show’s haunting allure. With Bill Condon at the helm and a stellar cast including Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh, this film dives into the political and personal struggles of Molina and Valentin, prisoners in 1970s Argentina. The stage’s poignant exploration of identity and resistance will undoubtedly gain new resonance on screen. Premiering at Sundance 2025, this adaptation could reignite interest in this Kander and Ebb classic, setting the bar high for future revivals.

Jennifer Lopez is set to star in a film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, marking her first role in a full-fledged musical. Directed and written by Oscar-winner Bill Condon (Chicago, Dreamgirls), the film is based on John Kander and Fred Ebb’s score and Terrence McNally’s book, adapted from Manuel Puig’s novel. Set in a 1981 Argentinian prison, the story follows Molina, a gay hairdresser who escapes his harsh reality through fantasies of a silver screen diva, Aurora, played by Lopez. Molina’s life changes when he shares a cell with Marxist revolutionary Valentin, forging an unlikely bond. With Molina’s casting still to be announced, the project joins a legacy that includes a 1985 film adaptation (earning William Hurt an Oscar) and a 1993 musical that won seven Tonys.

As stage musicals find new life in film, the adaptations offer something for everyone—whether it’s the sweeping spectacle of Wicked: For Good, the vibrant energy of On Your Feet!, or the dramatic depth of Kiss of the Spider Woman. The stage-to-screen pipeline is thriving, and audiences are in for a musical feast. Which one will you see first?
