Music Theatre Stars Perform for Gala Benefit, Melbourne

Some of Australia’s biggest musical theatre names will be performing in a charity fundraiser next week, at Melbourne’s newest cabaret venue: Rice Queen.

 

Some of Australia’s biggest musical theatre names will be performing in a charity fundraiser next week, at Melbourne’s newest cabaret venue: Rice Queen.

Doors will open at 6pm Monday 13th June for The Big Bali Knees Up Banquet Opening Night Gala and will feature performances from such artists as Lucy Maunder and Belinda Wollaston (Dr. Zhivago) Michael Falzon (Rock of Ages), and cast from Next To Normal.

From Monday night and for the next month, Rice Queen Oriental Diner and Bar will be serving $35 banquets and donating $10 from each banquet sold to the little known Yayasan Kerti Praja Foundation of Bali.

“Raising awareness and much needed financial support for this foundation is so important. The money we raise will be distributed more specifically to the foundations’ outreach program, focusing on Gay, Transgender and MSM workers of Bali”, a spokesperson from Rice Queen has said.

“Emily Rowe PhD [founder of the Yayasan Kerti Praja Foundation], caught up with us here at Rice Queen, and brought our attention the plight of sex workers and other marginalized populations living in Bali. The stigma attached to people and their lifestyle choices in Bali, often leads to them being cast out from their families society and leaving them vulnerable, and many of them are living with HIV and AIDS. They are often left without any support as most palliative care in Indonesia is carried out in the family home.”

“We are thrilled that some of Australia’s vibrant theatre community have agreed to donate their time (and a song) to the opening night Gala”, says Noni McCallum, manager of Rice Queen, and founder of Cabaret Queen @ Rice Queen, Melbourne’s newest cabaret event.

“We are hoping the Melbourne theatre community will come along and support this cause”, she says.
