It’s a miracle! Today the Royal Shakespeare Company, Louise Withers, Michel Coppel and Michael Watt announced that Matilda the Musical will move down to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre from 13 March 2016.
The show is currently running in Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, where it opened to instant and affectionate audience acclaim. Our Sydney review calls the show a “sharp, intelligent winner” with songs that are “joyous, complex, and refreshing.”
Matilda is also playing in London’s West End and on Broadway, in both cities running for over two years (it’s been on the West End since 2011, and on Broadway since 2013).
Based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, the show is diredcted by Matthew Warchus, with a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Australia’s own Tim Minchin.
“We’re delighted that Australian audiences have fallen in love with Matilda,” said producer Louise Withers.
“We look forward to continued success during our current Sydney run and moving Matilda to Melbourne.”
Matilda opens in Melbourne on 13 March 2016 and tickets go on sale for the season at 9am on 20 October 2015. For more information about the show, visit http://au.matildathemusical.com.
