Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King is returning to Australia this year and round two audition submissions are now being accepted for the blockbuster musical.

The production is set to open in Sydney during December 2013 and play an anticipated 8 month season at the Capitol Theatre, with rehearsals commencing in October.

Casting has begun for the production, but is by no means complete and Casting Director Leanne Cherny spoke with AussieTheatre about the requirements for all performers interested in auditioning.

“This is round two, so it’s a more specified search”, she told AussieTheatre. “The show’s ensemble very much consists of singers and dancers rather than singer/dancers.”

Round two casting briefs have been issued for both dancers and singers across Australia and New Zealand.

“Vocally with the show, the male singers need to have a strong high A and female singers need an excellent belt to a top E”, Cherny explained.

Round two auditions are scheduled to take place this coming April in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland.

Performers from all cultural backgrounds who are over 18 (as of October 2013) are encouraged to submit themselves for an audition.

We are looking for strong male and female singers with a good sense of movement.
Singers are not required to have any professional experience. Applicants must be aged 18 years (by October 2013) through to late 30s and of diverse ethnic background.

We are looking for male and female dancers with a background in modern and ballet dance. Emphasis is on strong technical training- no musical theatre or singing experience is required. We are on the search for the best technical dancers in Australia.

Applicants should read the submission requirement carefully. Due date for submissions is 15 March 2013. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Casting Director’s office and allocated a time, date and location for their audition.

While Thomas Schumacher (President of Disney Theatrical Group) could not confirm a national tour for the production at the show’s official launch last year, he admitted that sending the production around the country would be “logical”.

“It is logical that we can go to other cities”, said Schumacher, live from Times Square NYC via satellite at the launch announcement, “but the plan is not fixed yet”.
