Les Miserables announces Perth and Sydney seasons, 2015

Wasting no time after a star studded opening gala at Her Majesty’s Theatre last night, Producer Cameron Mackintosh today announced today Les Miserables will transfer to the Capitol Theatre, Sydney in March next year.

This new production, which will also play a short season in Perth in January 2015 prior to its Sydney opening, features modernised staging, orchestrations and reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, author of the novel on which the musical is based.

“I am very excited to announce that this new Australian production of Les Misérables will open in Sydney in 2015,” Cameron Mackintosh said.

“Sydney holds a very special place in the history of Les Mis, opening to our very first Australian audiences in 1987 and we are delighted to be bringing this new production to Sydney next year.”

The production is projected to generate approximately $32 million in “visitor expenditure over six months” according to NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Andrew Stoner, with an estimated 91,000 people set to travel to Sydney to see the production.

“The NSW Government is delighted to have secured this anniversary season of Les Misérables for Sydney through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW”, Stoner said in a statement.

The cast of this Australian production of Les Miserables include Simon Gleeson in the coveted lead role of Jean Valjean, Hayden Tee as Valjean’s lifelong antagonist Javert, Patrice Tipoki as Fantine. Trevor Ashley, Lara Mulcahy, Euan Doidge, Chris Durling, Kerrie Anne Greenland and Emily Langridge round out the principal cast.

Les Miserables is set to be a sure-fire box office smash, with several shows during the preview week already boasting the “house full” sign.
