Kinky Boots: on its way to Melbourne?
There’s no official word yet, but it sounds like it might be happening: Kinky Boots, the Tony Award winning Broadway musical, might be on its way to Melbourne.
This week the Herald Sun reported the news, stating that:
“The musical, set to Cindy Lauper’s original score, will open next year in a co-production by Cameron Mackintosh and Michael Cassel. It is the stage version of the hit 2005 film starring Joel Edgerton and is expected to open in Melbourne.“
Kinky Boots, based on the 2005 UK film, boasts a book by Harvey Fierstein as well as lyrics by Lauper, and tells the story of Charlie Price, who tries to save the shoe factory he inherited from his father by making high-heeled boots for drag queens.
It has been running on Broadway since 2013, launched a US national tour in 2015, and will open in London’s West End in August this year.
The show won six Tony Awards including taking out the award for Best Musical.
