Inside the new Australian tour of The Sound of Music: we talk to the cast – Amy Lehpamer

The well loved musical, The Sound of Music, will commence in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre on 13 December this year, followed by a season at Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre from 11 March, 2016. We sat down with the cast for a quick chat about the show and will feature our interviews on AussieTheatre.

John Frost announced the stellar cast of this acclaimed production last week.

“We have assembled a sensational cast to play these iconic roles. Cameron Daddo will be a wonderfully strong and stern Captain, and Amy Lehpamer, already with several musical roles to her name, will leap to stardom as Maria.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Marina Prior again, and to bring Lorraine Bayly to musical theatre audiences.

“And we’re especially pleased to bring acclaimed opera star Jacqui Dark to the musical stage.”

We chatted to the wonderful cast about this exciting upcoming production and what they’re all looking forward to about it.
And here she is… Meet our Maria, Amy Lehpamer!

AMY LEHPAMER

On being a fan of the film:

“I just love the music, I love Julie Andrews, I love Christopher Plummer, I love the baroness. I have a screenshot of the dress she wears to the party and would maybe one day wear to my wedding, which is so embarrassing!

I just love the film, for a number of reasons. Mainly, it’s the music. It’s funny because in musical theatre we don’t sing the songs because it’s so well known, but I’ve always wanted to sing ‘The Sound of Music’, because it’s so beautiful, so great with imagery and it really sets up the character so well. So I’m so excited to be able to sing it for real, in front of people, as my job. I’m really excited!”

On taking on the challenging role of Maria:

“It’s a big sing, it’s a big role, it’s a big journey, it’s a long show. And it’s my first really legit show; it’s a different quality of sound. I’m so excited to be in a musical like this where the strings really soar with you. And the audience are so invested because they have their own memories of it as well. So you’re quite responsible for a lot of people’s childhoods, I will take care of her, I promise!”

On playing step-mum to her fellow Once alumni, Stefanie Jones (Liesl):

“I am so excited. I love Stefanie, she’s the best human. When I saw her at the callbacks, my eyes welled up I was so excited. And she was actually Brigitta when they did it in 2000, and I love that she’s grown up to be Liesl. There was a moment at the Once after party, and I was like ‘I really want to be Maria’ and she was like ‘I really want to be Liesl’, and we were like ‘OK, we’ll work really hard’. Dreams can come true, kids. Work hard.”
