Hairspray closes today in Sydney

The final Australian performance of Hairspray will take place at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney this afternoon.

The final Australian performance of Hairspray will take place at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney this afternoon.

Originally opening in Melbourne in 2010, this has been a completely Australian production of the musical from the ground up. Rather than a cookie cutter reproduction of the original broadway show, the tour has featured original Australian direction by David Atkins and choreography by Jason Coleman. It also boasts a completely new design led by production designer Eamon D’arcy.

At this stage the exact future of the production is unknown, but according to the press notes included in the closing notice:

“Touring options are being considered and strong interest is shown from overseas producers for international productions of David Atkins’ spectacular production”.

The show has been lauded critically, nominated for 7 Helpmann Awards at the 2011 ceremony, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (David Atkins OAM), Best Choreography of a Musical (Jason Coleman) and winning the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Esther Hannaford, for the role of Penny).

AussieTheatre.com would like to wish all the cast and crew Chookas for their final show.
