After being inspired by Walk the Line, acclaimed actor and musician, Michael Tuahine came up with the original concept that follows the life and music of one of Australia’s most loved indigenous country music super stars. Tuahine worked with Reg Cribb who wrote the play, which won him the 2013 Rodney Seaborn Playwright’s Award for New Work.

Directed by Wesley Enoch, Country Song is a heart warming, toe-tapping journey that celebrates the healing power of music against the historical backdrop of the major social changes of the 1970’s. Interwoven through the story, are other prominent indigenous singers of the time, including Auriel Andrew, Bobby McLeod and Lionel Rose in this tribute to the era and the music that was a soundtrack for a generation.

The ensemble cast includes Bradley McCaw, David Page, Elaine Crombie, Megan Sarmardin, and Tibian Wyles, with Michael Tuahine playing Jimmy Little.

Bobbi-Lea got the chance to talk with Michael Tuahine about the inspiration behind this important work that brings our cultural history to the stage.

Presented by QPAC and Queensland Theatre Company, Country Song, is part of the commitment between Queensland Theatre Company and Queensland Performing Arts Centre towards the development and presentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander work.

Country Song will play at the Cremorne Theatre till August 8.
