Fasten Your Seatbelts For Flight!

Fasten your seatbelts for Flight, one of the most popular operas of our time, now officially on sale! This  heartwarming production by Scottish Opera, led by Australian Director Stephen Barlow, promises a captivating blend of drama, humour, and profound beauty.

Set in an airport terminal during a raging storm, Flight explores the lives of ten stranded passengers, crew, and airport workers who are forced to confront their circumstances and each other. Based on the true story that inspired Steven Spielberg’s film The Terminal, it centres on a stateless refugee with a harrowing tale and the everyday people whose lives intertwine in this confined space.

Jonathan Dove, one of the world’s most prolific and accomplished operatic composers, partners with librettist April de Angelis to bring this poignant and funny opera to life, with a unique style that straddles the line between comedy and tragedy. His ability to weave together diverse musical influences ensures that Flight remains firmly rooted in operatic tradition while being accessible and engaging.

State Opera South Australia’s Artistic Director, Dane Lam remarked on Flight’s masterful blend of humour and misfortune:

Flight captures the essence of humanity in its most vulnerable state, reminding us of our shared experiences. It’s a beautiful blend of comedy and pathos, and we’re thrilled to bring this timeless story to life in Adelaide.

With Adelaide Airport signing on as a major partner for Flight, Managing Director, Brenton Cox:

it was a fitting performance to support one of the State’s pre-eminent arts organisations.

As an airport community, we understand the complexities and emotions tied to travel, although we hope our own customers never have to go through a similar experience!

We’re fortunate to witness extraordinary interactions between strangers and loved ones on a daily basis, and I love how this opera showcases resilience and the connections that can form in unexpected circumstances, Featuring an ensemble cast of world-class talent, including countertenor James Laing, Anna Voshege, Samuel Dale Johnson and Teddy Tahu Rhodes, the production showcases Dove’s masterful storytelling through music and voice.

British Conductor Charlotte Corderoy leads the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, promising an unforgettable performance.

Flight returns to Adelaide almost 20 years after its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Festival in 2006, with a powerful production never seen before in the Southern Hemisphere. This exclusive three-show season will be only in Adelaide, from 8-10 May 2025 at Her Majesty’s Theatre
