The smash hit sensation A Chorus Line, which opens tomorrow at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne is boasting over $3 million in advance sales, proving that Australian audiences are still very keen to see quality music theatre.
Producer Tim Lawson, is thrilled with the public enthusiasm surrounding this revival of Michael Bennett’s 1975 Tony Award winning show, which was directed by Original Broadway Cast member (and Bennett’s assistant) Baayork Lee.
After an extremely successful season at the Adelaide Festival Centre in January, Lawson says the show looks wonderful in the historic Her Majesty’s Theatre.
“Bookings are fabulous”, he told AussieTheatre today. “Melbourne has recouped it’s costs before opening with over $3m in advance sales”.
“We certainly have invitations to take the show to other cities in Australia and Asia, which I’m considering, whilst monitoring the current climate at home” Lawson told AussieTheate in November last year.
No contracts with venues have been confirmed at this point, but in the light of Melbourne and Adelaide’s successes, it seems the climate is perfect for touring.
“I’m afraid nothing has been signed, though the plans are there to cover all cities this year”, he told AussieTheatre today.
