Empress Theatre & Redline Productions Present the Australian premiere of IS GOD IS

“We ain’t killers.”

“How you figure that? … Iss in the blood.”

Twin sisters Racine and Anaia journey cross country from America’s Dirty South to California, sent by their wrathful mother to exact righteous revenge. On the edge of the desert, in a small yellow house, they will confront the man that devastated their lives.

“Either you or me or somebody got to go today. World can’t hold us both.”

Biblical allegory collides with Greek tragedy, Afropunk, the Spaghetti western and hip hop in the Australian premiere of Aleshea Harris’s award-winning play Is God Is.

Winner of the 2016 American Playwriting Foundation’s Relentless Award and 2018 Obie Award for Playwriting, Is God Is careens from bloody revenge thriller to gritty western epic.

From the team behind 2019’s Cyprus Avenue comes the Australian premiere of the gripping new play that stunned US critics and audiences. Anna Houston directs Shauntelle Benjamin, Gemma Bird Matheson, Branden Christine, Kevin Copeland, Daniel Gabriel, Damon Manns, Dorian Nkono & Sasha-Lee Saunders in a production that is an unbridled tale of family dysfunction and violence told through the bloody journey of two sisters.

“Step aside, Quentin Tarantino and Martin McDonagh, and all you other macho purveyors of mutilation and mayhem with a smile. A snarly new master of high-octane carnage has risen into view. And she – yes, she – is putting her own audacious stamp on that most venerable of pop genres, the old-as-time tale in which getting even comes accessorised with flames, screams and buckets of blood.… Is God Is sees fit to bring down the house.”
