Crown Melbourne Plans Major Redevelopment of The Palms Theatre to Attract World-Class Entertainment

Crown Melbourne is set to transform one of its premier event venues, The Palms Theatre, in a bid to lure Broadway productions, renowned international musicians, and top-tier comedians to the city.

The ambitious redevelopment will expand the theatre’s capacity from 870 to 1,200 seats and revitalize the space currently used for cabaret-style functions, tribute shows, and more intimate performances. Crown’s strategy aims to introduce concerts, musicals, theatrical productions, and even Las Vegas-style artist residencies into its growing entertainment portfolio.

“This transformation is about raising the bar for entertainment experiences in the CBD,” said Crown Melbourne Chief Executive Mike Volkert. “By increasing the seating capacity and modernizing the facilities, we’re setting the stage for longer residencies and higher-caliber acts that add cultural value to our community.”

The upgrade will include a newly designed foyer, an updated box office, and more comfortable seating arrangements, all part of Crown’s broader vision to shift focus from traditional gaming to world-class live entertainment. The move follows the recent launch of the Californian-inspired restaurant Marmont, underscoring the company’s commitment to reinventing its entertainment offerings.

Scheduled to commence early next year and complete by late 2026, the project is expected to boost Melbourne’s visitor economy and reinforce the city’s reputation as Australia’s cultural capital. “It’s an extension of our strategic vision for reinvesting in Crown and supporting the broader tourism economy,” Volkert added. “Our goal is to create a venue that not only hosts a diverse range of shows—from theatre and music to comedy—but also drives more visitors to the CBD.”

The planned upgrades at The Palms Theatre are poised to rival other regional venues, such as Crown Perth’s theatre, which has previously hosted Broadway hits like Matilda, Singin’ in the Rain, The Lion King, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. With the expanded seating and enhanced amenities, Crown Melbourne is gearing up to welcome an even broader range of high-profile acts in the near future.

As the redevelopment promises to elevate The Palms Theatre into a premium venue for international and local entertainment, Melbourne residents and visitors alike can look forward to a revitalized cultural hub that offers more diverse and dynamic live performances.
