Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced today that the smash-hit musical Moulin Rouge! will be heading to Australia for its premiere at the Regent Theatre, Melbourne in 2021.
The musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s incredibly successful 2001 film of the same name, opened in Boston mid-2018 before transferring to Broadway where it opened this week. Melbourne will be the international premiere of the show.
Moulin Rouge! is produced by Australian company Global Creatures who are no stranger to the movie to musical conversion having previously brought us the musical versions of King Kong, Strictly Ballroom and Muriel’s Wedding.
It is a win for Melbourne over Sydney, in the battle for the ‘Theatre Capital’, although at a certain point it must be where there is theatre space, with so many major musical tours slated for the next 3 years it is a puzzle to work out where they will all fit.
We will bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.
