Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is ticking all the boxes

Anyone involved with the Australian production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are no doubt beating their chests with pride this week.

They say good news comes in threes, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang have made a hat trick across the country.

Today, QPAC have confirmed a limited season of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in Brisbane from November 19, making Queensland the fifth Australian state to receive this magical production. Seasons have played so far in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, with a Perth season set to commence September 4.

Earlier this week, tickets for the Perth season were released, grossing more than $1 million. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang now boasts the title of ‘third highest first-day sales’ in Crown Theatre’s history, and if Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide seasons are anything to go by, houses are likely to be strong throughout the Perth season.

Finally, (and perhaps the most exciting of the three for the team at the AussieTheatre office) the cast and crew of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang have become the first Australian musical company to respond to a challenge placed by the Australian Mary Poppins company earlier this year.

Mary Poppins’ YouTube sensation – a staged and produced music video featuring the cast and crew lip syncing to Proud Mary – was posted on Christmas Day 2012 and has been viewed over 21,000 times. The cast and crew also challenged other Australian musical theatre companies to create their own video clips.

Yesterday, the Chitty company responded to the call with a similarly styled video, set to Rhianna’s pop tune ‘Shut Up And Drive’, clocking up over 1000 views in less than 24 hours.

So now, the bar has been set – Legally Blonde, Hot Shoe Shuffle, South Pacific and Addams Family – the ball is in your court!
