Charity performance for Calendar Girls

Theatre lovers are being given the first to see the Calendar Girls in Sydney whilst showing their support for the Leukaemia Foundation, the only national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the care and cure of patients living with blood cancers.

The final dress rehearsal charity performance on Wednesday, April 28 at the Theatre Royal will give Sydney audiences the first chance to see the stage show featuring an all-star cast: Lorraine Bayly, Rachel Berger, Rhonda Burchmore, Cornelia Frances, Jean Kittson, Anna Lee and Amanda Muggleton.

“All proceeds from the charity performance will support the Leukaemia Foundation’s Vision to Cure and Mission to Care,” said Stuart Allen, General Manager of the Leukaemia Foundation in NSW/ACT.

Calendar Girls tells an uplifting and inspiring true story that is poignant and hilarious. It is based on the true story of a group of middle-aged English women who posed for a nude charity calendar when friend Angela Baker lost her husband to lymphoma. Their story also inspired a feature film of the same name starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.

“The original ‘calendar girls’ created a media storm when they posed nude to create a charity calendar. Twelve years on, they have raised over $1.5 million for leukaemia and lymphoma research in the UK,” Allen said.

“Now, on the other side of the world, the stage production their story inspired will raise money for research and services to help Australians impacted by blood cancers.

“The original woman are an inspiration. They highlight the extraordinary things that ordinary people can achieve by working together, something we see regularly in our own supporters.

“We thank producers of the Australia production for selecting the Leukaemia Foundation as charity beneficiary. We’re honoured to become part of the Calendar Girls story.”

Calendar Girls Australian producer John Frost is pleased to be working with the Leukaemia Foundation on this project.

“This is a wonderful play, especially since it is a true story. I’m thrilled our Australian production will raise a great deal of money for the Leukaemia Foundation, and will tangibly assist Australians affected by leukaemia and other blood cancers,” he said.
