Canberra Theatre Centre Open Day

The Canberra Theatre Centre is opening its doors, inviting you to explore the ACT’s premier performing arts venue from a whole new perspective. Join in the fun of this rare and exclusive backstage access, as the centre celebrates 60 sensational years in 2025.

As you wander the halls of these iconic venues, you’ll be able to experience what it’s like to stand on The Playhouse stage, learn about how your favourite productions come to life behind-the-scenes and make your way through the dressing rooms which have played host to some of the world’s biggest names over the past six decades.

There’ll be plenty of other activities throughout the day to keep the whole family entertained and when your crew gets hungry, there’ll be food trucks on site as well as some sweet treats to choose from.

Alex Budd, Canberra Theatre Centre Director:

Canberra Theatre Centre is the oldest performing arts centre in the country with a rich history of hosting some of the Australia’s most beloved stars and productions and I cannot wait to welcome the community for a behind-the-scenes look inside our beautiful venues.

Our friends at the Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) are also joining the party. CMAG will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sidney Nolan’s gift to the nation with a range of free activities from 10:00am – 4:00pm, Saturday 10th May. Join curator led tours of the Nolan Gallery and learn more about this nationally significant collection.

Plus, there will be an exclusive opportunity to peek behind the scenes and view conservation works in action. There will also be plenty of family fun with our “Where’s Ned?” treasure hunt and opportunities to get creative at our paint your own masterpiece station, plus, a Nolan inspired chalk art experience.

And, because it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake, there will be Nolan 50th cupcakes available for the first 50 people who attend.

Open Day is part of the Canberra Theatre Centre’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The centre will also be hosting a dazzling post-show celebration after The Australian Ballet’s performance of Carmen in June – exactly 60 years to the day since the national Ballet company performed at the venue’s opening gala back in 1965.

Tickets to the post-show celebration are on sale now and are exclusively available to those who attend Carmen on Friday 20 June.

Best of all, this special Open Day event is completely free! Register now at our website (or via the link below) to secure your spot and be part of the celebration.

Please select the time you anticipate you will arrive to begin exploring our venue
