Cameron Mackintosh’s world tour of Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular announced

The renowned Cameron Mackintosh, partnering with Nick Grace Management, has unveiled plans for the globally awaited tour of ‘Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular’. The ambitious endeavour is set to kick off with dates across Europe, including select UK performances, starting September 2024.

Les Misérables is a historical novel written by Victor Hugo, which was later adapted into one of the world’s most renowned musicals. Set in early 19th-century France, it presents a profound exploration of French society’s political and moral core, focusing on the struggles of the disadvantaged and the battle between good and evil.

The primary character is Jean Valjean, a French peasant of unusual strength and potentially violent nature, who spends nineteen years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister’s family. After being released, Valjean breaks his parole and, spurred by a transformative encounter with a kind bishop, assumes a new identity to live an honest life. However, he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who is adamant about upholding the law.

As Valjean evades Javert’s pursuit, he becomes a successful factory owner and the town’s mayor, adopts Cosette, the mistreated daughter of a dying woman named Fantine, and navigates a world steeped in revolution and societal change. Throughout the narrative, Hugo delves into themes of moral redemption, the destructive nature of guilt, the power of love, and the social injustice prevalent in society.

The musical adaptation stays faithful to the novel’s essence, using powerful music and lyrics to bring the story and its enduring themes to life. It features iconic songs like “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?” and “Bring Him Home.”

In a statement released today, Mackintosh said;

From the inaugural concert performance of ‘Les Misérables’ in Sydney in January 1989, this incredible musical has demonstrated unparalleled potency and success in each of its reincarnations. Its various forms, be it full theatrical production, blockbuster musical film, or its numerous concert performances, have all struck a chord with global audiences. Over nearly four decades, it has been a launch pad for an array of global stars, transcending languages and countries.

The impending world tour offers a unique chance for acclaimed performers worldwide to revisit their beloved roles. Fans will delight in seeing their favourite stars (and mine!) in this much-loved musical. The enduring appeal of ‘Les Mis’ and its score continue to captivate audiences, securing its place as the public’s favourite musical, replete with unforgettable songs. The excitement surrounding cast reunion performances is always palpable, invariably leading to sell-out shows. I eagerly anticipate this tour serving as the ultimate homage to the iconic anthem ‘Do You Hear The People Sing’.

The fresh production is set to dazzle over 15 countries, with stops planned in the UK, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and beyond. It will run into the musical’s landmark 40th anniversary celebrations in 2025.

Tailored specifically for arenas and large theatres, this innovative show design is expected to accommodate audiences ranging from 3,000 to 5,000. An impressive UK company of over 110 actors, musicians, and crew will participate, with guest stars making appearances at different locations.

Further details on precise dates, cities, venues, casting, and ticket availability will be rolled out come autumn.

  • In an age where economies dictate the scope of Musicals and the whoop-whoop generations who are becoming the next patrons must be instantly drawn to their feet by percussion more than tunes, what better way to celebrate one of the grand orchestral musicals than in the grand atmosphere of an Arena Spectacular. As the nature of Musicals is rushed forward by the zeitgeist, perhaps this is the solution to maintaining a view of the grand past at the same time. Of course, it takes someone of the means and stature of Cameron Mackintosh to achieve that, but let's face it, his shows have paid for most of Australia's current performing arts venues anyway.

  • I took my daughter for her 16th birthday, she is now 50. She would serenade me in supermarkets with all the raunchy songs. At that time few people had heard of Les Mis but she knew every song prior to seeing the show. This was in Central West NSW and people would ask ‘Less what’? We have seen the production twice since but want to go again. Are Australian dates available?

  • Looking forward to this concert in Australia, have never seen the original play live, only on film and the 25th Anniversary arena concert on DVD which was fantastic.

  • I am so looking forward to it coming to Australia. I would love to go as many times as I can while it's here. It's my all time favourite.
