Calling all T-Birds and Pink Ladies: Grease confirmed for Australia, 2013

Grease is the word on the street this morning, with Aussie Producer John Frost and London’s David Ian announcing the return of popular musical Grease to the Australian stage.

A 2007 revival of the show in London and on Broadway sparked new interest in the 40 year old party musical, made famous by the 1978 film starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.

The Australian tour will be based on the Broadway and London revival, which cast the leading roles of Danny and Sandy via reality television competitions. No plans to cast the Australian production via reality TV have been announced, and a media release has stated that John Frost is already on the lookout for the “Danny and Sandy of today”. It is also understood that Frost has some “surprise casting decisions” to announce in the not too distant future.

Auditions for the students and staff of Rydell High are set to commence shortly for this new production, and dates for the Australian tour will be announced imminently.

John Frost has presented Grease as arena spectaculars twice before in Australia – once in 1998 in conjunction with Sports and Entertainment Limited (SEL) and again in 2005, co-presented an arena production starring John Farnham. But this brand new multi-million dollar production will be presented the old fashioned way – in proscenium arch theatres.

“I’m constantly asked when I’ll be producing Grease again – it’s possibly the most requested musical in the back catalogue of the Gordon Frost Organisation” he said.

“When the TV series Glee celebrated the music of Grease on one of their recent episodes, and Olivia Newton John and John Travolta reunited for a charity Christmas album in December, I knew the time was right to bring Grease back to Australia.”

So dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks prepare to witness Danny and Sandy fall in love all over again.
