Bargain Garden at Carriageworks

As part of Performance Space’s Exchange: a season of exhibitions and performances that explore the way we share and trade, new theatre work Bargain Garden will premiere from 1 – 5 November at CarriageWorks Sydney.

Inspired by the phenomenon of the two-dollar shop and an exciting first time collaboration between acclaimed performance company Theatre Kantanka (Missing the Bus to David Jones) and award-winning contemporary music collective Ensemble Offspring, Bargain Garden invites the audience to experience the rush and the aftermath of our consumer-driven, bargain-crazy culture and lifestyle in a fusion of performance, live music, kinetic sculpture, and multimedia installation.

For over 15 years the Sydney-based companies behind this new work (Theatre Kantanka and Ensemble Offspring) have earned reputations for producing unique and innovative works. Theatre Kantanka since its inception in 1995 has developed performances for non-traditional spaces such as car parks, gaols, tunnels, and gardens, and collaborates with visiting artists on a project by project basis to produce their trademark theatrical style featuring dynamic visual design and strong physical performance language. Ensemble Offspring, Australia’s premier new music group, recently featured in the Sydney Festival and presented Sizzle, a series of striking visual and sonic experiences in bowling clubs across Sydney.

Joining the core company for Bargain Garden are Kym Vercoe (version 1.0) and Justin Shoulder (Underbelly Arts 2011 and 2009). This new theatrical work has been developed through residencies at both Performance Space and Bundanon Trust.
