Australia Day heads to Riverside Theatres

From the Wharf Revue’s beloved Jonathan Biggins and MTC came the hilarious new comedy Australia Day, and ahead of a September engagement with the Sydney Theatre Company it is finding its way to Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres next month.

Get ready to take aim at our favourite day off work – Australia Day. From August 22 the Riverside will be home to this brand new and wicked parody, which centres around the bungling grassroots politics of a small town Australian Day Planning Committee. Watch as they tackle the big issues: does a sausage sizzle read as monocultural? Shold the special needs kids be forced to perform their dance routine on the day? The issue of cultural identity in this sleepy town is a prickly one.

Drawing on his own experiences as an Australia Day ambassador, playwright Jonathan Biggins takes a swipe at secular traditions and national holidays with fearless wit and good Aussie humour.

“It’s in the great Australian tradition of self deprecating comedy,” Biggins said.

Australia Day stars Valerie Bader, Kaeng Chan, David James, Peter Kowitz, Geoff Morrell, and Alison Whyte and is directed by Gary Abrahams.

Tickets are available via Riverside Theatres on 8839 3399 or www.riversideparramatta.com.au
