The nominations for the AACTA awards were announced today, and AussieTheatre is celebrating extra hard to see local talent recognised this year: our Editor in Chief, Erin James, has scored a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a film!
Erin appeared in this year’s The Little Death – a film by Josh Lawson about the secret fantasies of an ordinary Australian neighbourhood – and her stellar work as an interpreter caught in an awkward situation has captured the eye of critics and filmgoers around the world.
Also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category are Jacqueline McKenzie (The Water Diviner), Kate Mulvany (also for The Little Death), and Susan Prior (The Rover).
The Little Death received six AACTA nominations in total; the remaining four are for Damon Herriman (Best Actor), Kate Box (Best Actress), and Patrick Brammall and TJ Power, each for Best Supporting Actor.
Born and bred in Newcastle, NSW, AussieTheatre’s fearless leader received a Bachelor of Arts from WAAPA in 2005. Prior to studying at WAAPA she achieved her Associate of Trinity College London (ATCL) in Classical Voice (2002) and also graduated from the Talent Development Project (TDP). In 2007, after being awarded the TDP/ASCAP Bound for Broadway scholarship, Erin performed her cabaret in New York City. She has appeared in mainstage productions of Fiddler on the Roof, CATS, Love Never Dies, South Pacific, and most recently she was part of the cast of The King and I as an ensemble/swing, covering 14 roles in the production.
Working with the Australian Theatre of the Deaf’s national touring company for a year inspired Erin to learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language), and these skills feature hugely in her award-nominated performance. Erin is also a qualified high school music teacher (Grad Dip Ed) and is studying a post graduate Law degree. And, of course, all the while she’s running the show here at AussieTheatre!
Next up, Erin will be appearing in Blood Brothers at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre.
