Applications now open for Opera Australia’s renewed Young Artist Program

Applications are now open for Opera Australia’s Young Artist Program, which has been renewed in scope and format for 2025 in the Company’s ongoing commitment to developing new generations of talent.

Six young artists, including four singers, one repetiteur and one director, will be selected to participate in the paid, full-time program, with advanced opportunities for professional career development at the country’s premier opera company.

Opera Australia will embark on a three-month national audition process, looking for diverse voices and perspectives, who will help shape the future of opera. Ideal candidates will not only possess exceptional talent but also demonstrate creativity, adaptability, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of the art form.

The flagship program is aimed at emerging artists who have completed relevant training, or have equivalent experience, and are ready to step into the professional world.

Opera Australia’s incoming Young Artists will participate in 18-months of training, including:

  • Onsite training at The Opera Centre in Sydney.
  • A residency at an international opera house.
  • Training and mentorship by Opera Australia artists, renowned coaches and professionals from across Australia and around the world.
  • Advanced study tailored for each participant including vocal and dramatic coaching, language classes, career guidance, masterclasses, assistant and cover work, and commissions to this group of artists at the start of their professional career.
  • Professional integration into the company, including cover roles and performances in Opera Australia events and productions at the Sydney Opera House.

The generous support of Principal Patron Maureen Wheeler has enabled Opera Australia to offer all 2025 Young Artists full-time salaries for the duration of the program as well as providing financial support for domestic travel required throughout the audition process and relocation costs associated with participation in the program.

Applicants will complete 3 rounds of selection including: a video/audio submission, an in-person interview and audition, and a 3-day workshop at The Opera Centre in Sydney.
