Annie is looking for a Canine co-star

Does your pup have what it takes to star alongside the most famous orphan of all time? Well, the hit musical Annie is heading to Brisbane in April, and the tiny redhead is in the market for a canine co-star.

Auditions for dogs to play the role of ‘Sandy’ (a loveable stray whom Annie befriends) are being held TODAY, Sunday February 12, at South Bank’s Cultural Forecourt (between QPAC and the Brisbane river).

Dogs can be registered to audition on the day from 12pm to 4pm, but there are some restrictions. Potential pooches must be medium sized, aged between 12 months and five years old and a light or sandy red colour. They must also be happy to work with children and noise, and already have a high level of training.

The importance of this last requirement was highlighted when the show previewed in Sydney and the dog (a groodle named Coogee) was overcome with stage fright. Coogee had been trained in very noisy, busy environments, like shopping centres, but when the audience responded enthusiastically, the poor fellow thought he had done something wrong. His stage fright saw him swiftly sacked, and no doubt the producers will be keen to avoid a repeat of such a performance.

Be aware that you must be prepared to relinquish your four-legged friend into the care of experienced trainers from the 27th of February (at the earliest) until the end of the show’s five week season.

Annie has received rave reviews in Sydney and you are sure to recognise classic tunes like ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life’, ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile’, even if you are unfamiliar with the heart-warming story.
