Wicked Nominated for Four Golden Globes
The eagerly awaited film adaptation of Wicked has made a spectacular debut, receiving four Golden Globe nominations, including two for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The first part of the Jon M. Chu-directed movie musical, which hit cinemas on 22 November 2024, continues to captivate audiences and critics alike, having set box office records during its opening weekend.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the film tells the story of two university friends in the magical land of Oz—one destined to become Glinda the Good, and the other, the Wicked Witch of the West. Erivo stars as Elphaba, the misunderstood and powerful witch, while Grande plays the optimistic and bubbly Glinda. Their performances have earned them both nominations for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, marking a significant milestone in their careers.
In addition to the acting nominations, Wicked received a nod for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, a testament to the film’s cinematic achievements. The film’s box office success was also recognized with a nomination for Best Achievement in Box Office Performance, reflecting its strong commercial debut and enthusiastic fan response.
The film’s screenplay, co-written by Wicked’s original book author Winnie Holzman, composer Stephen Schwartz, and Dana Fox, has also drawn praise for its faithful yet innovative adaptation of the beloved stage musical. The music, including iconic songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” has been brought to life on screen with grandeur and spectacle, contributing to the film’s ongoing success.
Fans of the Wicked franchise can look forward to part two, which is slated for release on 21 November 2025, following a year-long interval. This highly anticipated continuation promises to delve deeper into the land of Oz and the stories of its famous characters.
In addition to Wicked, the Golden Globes also recognized Baby Reindeer, which was shortlisted for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Actors Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning were nominated for their standout performances in the series, which has been making waves for its dark humor and compelling storytelling.
As the 2025 Golden Globe Awards ceremony draws near, all eyes will be on Wicked as it vies for top honors, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande already making their mark on the season’s award race.
