Following the massive success of Wicked: Part One, which dominated the box office in late 2024 and became an awards season favorite, fans are eagerly awaiting its thrilling conclusion, Wicked: For Good. With its theatrical release set for November 21, 2025, the second installment of Jon M. Chu’s ambitious adaptation will bring audiences deeper into the political intrigue, heartbreak, and high-stakes magic of Oz.
For those unfamiliar with the Broadway classic or hoping to refresh their memories before Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters, here’s a breakdown of what to expect—major spoilers ahead!
The first movie left audiences with a cliffhanger, as Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) defied gravity and fled from the authorities, officially cementing her status as the so-called “Wicked Witch of the West.” Meanwhile, her younger sister Nessarose (Marissa Bode) inherited their father’s title as the Governor of Munchkinland, setting the stage for a power struggle that turns increasingly tragic.
Obsessed with keeping Boq (Ethan Slater) by her side, Nessarose casts a spell to bind him to her—only for it to go horribly wrong. As Boq nearly dies, Elphaba intervenes, unintentionally transforming him into the Tin Man. With heartbreak and betrayal unfolding, the political tensions in Oz escalate, painting Elphaba as an even greater villain in the eyes of the public.
Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), once Glinda’s (Ariana Grande-Butera) love interest, has had his heart set on Elphaba from the beginning. As their romance deepens, they share the passionate duet “As Long As You’re Mine,” but their happiness is short-lived. Now the reluctant Captain of the Wizard’s Guard, Fiyero makes a bold move to protect Elphaba from capture. In retaliation, the guards seize him, leading Elphaba to cast a desperate protection spell—a spell that will alter his fate forever.
Her incantation doesn’t work in the way she expects. Instead of saving him outright, it transforms Fiyero into the Scarecrow, robbing him of his old identity but ensuring his survival.
Throughout Wicked: Part One, Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) has shown that she’s not just an influential figure at Shiz University—she’s a master manipulator working alongside the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). In Wicked: For Good, her villainous machinations reach their peak.
After Glinda unknowingly provides the idea that Elphaba might return if Nessarose is in danger, Morrible and the Wizard take matters into their own hands. They summon the tornado that famously carries Dorothy’s house to Oz, a calculated move that kills Nessarose on impact. Dorothy unwittingly steps into the political war by claiming Nessarose’s enchanted silver shoes, placing her directly in Elphaba’s crosshairs.
Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship has always been a blend of admiration, rivalry, and heartbreak. While Glinda chooses the safer path of aligning with the Wizard’s regime, Elphaba continues fighting against Oz’s corrupt system. Their final confrontation happens when Elphaba takes Dorothy hostage in an attempt to retrieve the shoes, leading to a soul-baring moment between the two former best friends.
Their iconic duet “For Good” serves as a farewell, as they acknowledge the profound impact they’ve had on each other’s lives. But as Glinda watches, Elphaba is seemingly executed—until she vanishes, leaving behind only her signature hat.
Just as in the Broadway musical, audiences will be left wondering whether Elphaba truly dies. The truth? She escapes through a trapdoor, running away from Oz forever with Fiyero, who has now fully transformed into the Scarecrow. While the citizens of Oz believe they’ve rid themselves of their Wicked Witch, Elphaba and Fiyero find freedom together, far from the chaos.
Meanwhile, Glinda steps up to lead Oz into a new era, exposing the Wizard and Madam Morrible’s corruption and ensuring their downfall. With Glinda now firmly in control of the Emerald City, the film ends with a bittersweet note—while Elphaba survives, she and Glinda will never see each other again.
With Wicked: Part One already establishing itself as a cinematic triumph, Wicked: For Good is shaping up to be a grand and emotional conclusion. Featuring show-stopping numbers, high-stakes betrayals, and a fresh perspective on one of the most iconic villains-turned-heroes in musical theatre history, the sequel is poised to leave audiences spellbound.
