What an incredible event in honour of the Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential figures in 20th century music theatre. Mr Sondheim was considered by many to have ‘reinvented’ American musicals with productions that highlighted themes that were previously considered beyond the genre’s traditional subjects.
The American Academy of Achievement described his work as “music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication”.
The stars united for his 90th birthday on April 26th on Broadway.com and their associated Youtube channel for an aptly named Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration. The event was hosted by Raul Esparza and directed by Paul Wontorek and featured a star studded line up including Neil Patrick Harris, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Groban, Meryl Streep, Mandy Patinkin, Ben Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Christine Baranski, Annaleigh Ashford, Sutton Foster, Melissa Errico, Laura Benanti, Beanie Feldstein, Judy Kuhn, Linda Lavin, Lea Salonga, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Iain Armitage, Stephen Schwartz and Chip Zien to name a few.
The event raised money for ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty) by donating here.
